Ibuprofen

Public

Well, that's odd. I went into town this morning to buy a pack of ibuprofen. Sainsbury's charged 90p, so I walked down the road to Tesco, where they were 35p. Both standard generic packs of 16 tablets, the same as you get in every supermarket in the country. And no, it wasn't that one was tablets and one was caplets. They were identical. What Sainsbury's are playing at I don't know. Here endeth the health report. :P

New Improved Computer Excitement!

Two days ago my Mac Mini informed me that it hadn't done a time machine backup for two weeks, and couldn't do one until my backup disk was physically connected. It was connected, but the OS couldn't see it. There hadn't been a power failure or computer shutdown. Naturally that jumped to the top of my queue, displacing what I'd hoped would be a day of slow progress with the transition to Linux.

I did all the usual debugging things, and determined I didn't have the parts and tools to determine whether it was disk, cable, USB port or software glitch. So I made an appointment with Apple's genius bar. They were able to establish that the disk had quietly died on me, and the computer was otherwise fine.

Meanwhile, I'd written a little script to use rsync to copy the entire contents of my mac home directory to the linux box. It was huge, and the copy took a number of hours. Now both systems have mostly full 2 GB SSDs.

I then began researching external drives, and reasonable sizes for a backup device for system with 2 GB of internal storage. Time Machine seemed to want at least twice the size of the system's non-backup storage. Father research showed that spinning disks in external enclosures cost a third of the price of same-sized SSDs in external enclosures. Moreover, Walmart could deliver a 4 GB drive the same evening if I ordered quickly. (Every other vendor wanted to take a week, or demanded $ for faster delivery, or both.) It also had a suitable 8 GB drive, but no 6 GB drive, and I figured 8 GB was too big for my purposes.

Two 4 GB drives arrived last night - the other one is for the linux system, which I'd been backing up to the mac, and from there into its time machine backup - never intended as a permanent solution.

Alien Romance, the daily comic strip

Oh no, I'm so far behind! This is a dump of all the daily comics I've done since last time I posted. I'll summarize it in the image descriptions, but I don't have time to do a full transcript. I'll copy and paste the translation transcript I did on the comic that's in French.

The two raver dudes who live downstairs from Ren Cathy and Maurice are arguing and Owen storms off and goes downstairs to sulk on the porch where Cathy is sitting reading a magazine

Owen tells Cathy that he and his boyfriend need couples counseling but he is afraid to seek it out because he is afraid of being discriminated against

Maurice and Ren approach while engaging in light banter and Owen whispers to Cathy that he thinks their height difference is amusing and then when they climb the stairs onto the porch Cathy tells them what Owen said

Owen is embarrassed but Maurice and Ren assure him that they have already noticed the height difference and are not offended
Two conversations happen at once Cathy and Maurice speaking in French here

French translation:
(As always, not guaranteed to be a direct translation, and errors and typos may occur.)

Cathy: "What are you saying?"
Maurice: "Owen is worried about embarrassing me because I'm a short man."
Cathy: "Oh!"
Maurice: "But I already know."
Cathy: "Yeah! It's nothing to be embarrassed about."

Maurice: "Eh, I suppose."
Cathy: "It's not a bad thing. I chose you."
Maurice: "Some people don't want to choose a man like me."
Cathy: "Fortunately! I'm not sharing."
...
"If you want the whole world to find you attractive, then, damn, what am I?"
Maurice: "Sorry! That was too much French for me."

And simultaneously:

Owen and Ren talk about Sammy whose name is actually Seth but he is thinking of changing it and Ren is intrigued by this idea

Okay! Almost caught up. I always update the Alien Romance Patreon page first, so if you're in a hurry, you can always pop over there (and subscribe if you want, not necessary but certainly welcome). But it will all appear here on Dreamwidth too. Just sometimes with a delay. I've been quite overwhelmed lately and I'm not afraid to admit it. More overwhelmed than when I previously said I was overwhelmed. And will get increasingly overwhelmed in the foreseeable future. Thanks for hanging in there with me.

Did Romania's 'King of TikTok' Really Sway a Presidential Election?

Posted by DirtyOldTown

Meet Bogdan Peschir, the crypto trader who allegedly traded virtual "fire phoenixes" to try and swing the Romanian presidential election. [Archive] Using nearly $1 million in TikTok gifts to recruit an army of influencers, the user known as "Bogpr" helped catapult a fringe, far-right candidate from 1% in the polls to a shocking first-place victory in the first round runoff. Romanian intelligence suggests this was a masterclass in Russian hybrid warfare, complete with 25,000 "live" bots and SVR hacking units working to subvert democracy in a country where nearly half the population are TikTok users.

Romania eventually threw out this first round of voting and disqualified Georgescu with the far more centrist candidate Nicușor Dan defeating Georgescu's similarly extremist replacement.

Willow Cuttings

Yesterday we ordered two different kinds of willow cuttings. I couldn't find a new contorta willow at a reasonable price, so I'm trying these instead. It will take time for them to grow roots, but willows are the easiest plant to root -- they make their own rooting hormone, which can be used to stimulate other plant cuttings to root.  Also, willows are keystone species that support over 450 other species, especially butterfly and moth caterpillars that feed baby birds.  Some birds also like to nest in willows.  Most willows bloom very early and feed bees emerging in spring.

I fed the birds. I've seen a few sparrows.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 2/26/26 -- I put out a fresh cake of peanut suet.

your periodic podcast rec request post

I do a lot of work where my hands are occupied but my mind is not (hello, rehousing!!!) and may main exercise is walking so I listen to a lot of podcasts, and I am always looking for more.

My favorite ongoing podcasts are In Bed With the Right, Know Your Enemy, If Books Could Kill, Maintenance Phase, Panic World, and A Bit Fruity. These are the shows I listen to every episode of and (most of them) support on Patreon so I get extra episodes. Oh, and On the Nose from Jewish Currents.

There are a number I also like but don't listen to every episode of, just dipping in and out as they interest me. These include Behind the Bastards, Hoax!, HyperFixed, Search Engine, Straight White American Jesus, Culture Study, Decoder Ring, American Hysteria, Strongwilled, 5-4, and The Dream.

Then there are my classic favorites that I haven't listened to in a while but loved madly: You Must Remember This, You're Wrong About, and You Are Good.

One limited run I listened to lately was What Happened in Nashville, about the unregulated fertility treatment industry through the lens of a big scandal that happened in my hometown and found it interesting.

Things I like in a podcast:

+ Culture and/or history and/or current events through a leftist/feminist lens. It's really important to me that these are serious thinkers or deeply insightful people, even if what they're talking about is lighter fare
+ People who take culture and internet culture seriously but want to deeply critique it
+ Stuff about religion--not in the sense of being religious but in the sense of talking about how religion works in the world
+ Stuff that is well-researched
+ Stuff about moral panics
+ I tend to be drawn to podcasts that are created by people who are first and foremost either writers/journalists or scholars (with the exception of A Bit Fruity, all my favorite current podcasts are created by people in those categories)
+ Anything Michael Hobbes is involved with lol
+ Oh and my guilty pleasure is anything about cults (other people listen to true crime stuff, I listen to cult stuff)

Things I don't like in a podcast:
+ Humor podcasts (a lot of these people are very funny, but none of these podcasts are comedy podcasts)
+ Generic culture/pop culture stuff (by which I mean the sort of overviews of just what's going on in the world of pop culture)
+ Fiction (I'm sorry, but Welcome to Night Vale is the only one that ever truly worked for me)
+ Pure news podcasts
+ Interview podcasts that focus on celebs
+ Honestly anything about celebrities, I just don't care
+ Self-help stuff

Cardinal John Henry Newman filk, repeated

Whoops! It was John Henry Newman's birthday the other day, and I missed the opportunity to post this again. It can be sung to at least one version of John Henry, though things may have to be adjusted here and there. Here ya go:

When John Henry Newman was an Anglican
He went down to the Holy See
Said I wanna see the Pope 'cause I got a crazy hope
That they're gonna make a Catholic out of me, Lord, Lord,
They're gonna make a Catholic out of me.

When John Henry Newman was a young man
He wrote about a Kindly Light
He called it "Pillar of Cloud," and if you sing it real loud
It'll lead you through the gloomy night, Lord, Lord,
It'll lead you through the gloomy night.

John Henry Newman was at Oxford
He was a deacon and a curate too
He got to be a vicar but decided it was quicker
To scribble down a tract or two, Lord, Lord
To scribble down a tract or two.

John Henry Newman up at Oxford
At St. Mary's chapel on the side
He told them in a lecture that it was his conjecture
The middle way was fine and wide, Lord, Lord
The middle way was fine and wide.

John Henry Newman got in trouble
Reading monophysite lore
"This bit about "securus" -- it doesn't reassure us
I think I better think a little more, Lord, Lord,
I think I better think at Littlemore. "

John Henry Newman had a buddy
Father Ambrose, he liked Rome
They liked St. Philip Neri, so in the vale of Mary
They built themselves a home sweet home, Lord, Lord,
They built themselves a home sweet home.

John Henry Newman got converted
And it made him feel alive
But he lost a few subscribers the day he swam the Tiber
On 9 October '45, Lord, Lord,
On 9 October '45.

John Henry Newman bought a ticket
John Henry Newman went to Rome
But though he got ordained, he did not remain
He packed his bags and headed home, Lord, Lord,
He packed his bags and headed home.

John Henry Newman went to Oscott
To have a little toast and jam
And in a blaze of glory to build an Oratory
They later moved to Birmingham, Lord, Lord,
They later moved to Birmingham.

John Henry Newman took exception
To what he heard Kingsley say
Newman said "I showed ya ; I wrote an Apologia
And it's Pro Vita Sua all the way, Lord, Lord,
It's Pro Vita Sua all the way."

John Henry Newman got promoted
And they gave him a big red hat
They put it on his head, and everybody said,
"Mercy, will you look at that, Lord, Lord,
Mercy, will you look at that."

When John Henry Newman was an old man
He was a little on the quiet side.
He got a telegram from heaven on August eleven
And laid down his missal and he died, Lord, Lord,
He laid down his missal and he died.

John Henry Newman in his coffin
On compost did recline
He said "I have chosen, by completely decomposing,
To leave not a relic here to find, Lord, Lord,
I will leave not a relic here to find."

There. That was written by me some while ago -- September 20, 2010, I guess it was. Enjoy!

Warm up

Thursday

Things are starting to open up again, I'm back to work. Two nice days in a row, temperatures in the upper 30's to low 40's with some melting. The feeders have been busy and yesterday a flock of 6 Wild Turkeys hung around all day.

Check out the back door at work. They had to clear the roof due to the weight of the snow, hence the huge pile!

Here's the snow pile in my driveway..my feeder cam is back there, I won't get to it for awhile!

Prompt Response - Echoes from the Past

What did you think? What is it you believed, in that dark caverned heart of yours?

She lay abed and squeezed her eyes shut so tight she could press her fingertips into the furrows of her brow and run them back and forth the width of her forehead. And imagine the landscape outside the windows, outside the yards, outside the garden wall that kept her so enclosed. Body but not soul.

What was this place? She could feel a panic rise in her, the way the winds could rise up up up out of the gorge, lifting skirts, lifting hair, lifting her bodily from off the earth. Spinning away from all the things that tried to contain her. This place, the Grange. This man, called husband. This life, so askew. Lift her, arms out wide, could she fly away from all of it. Except for him. His body, his upturned face watching her as she ascended into the blue.

His voice, she could hear him. Cathy. Cathy.

The echo of it, between her ears, at the back of her throat, at the pulse points in her wrists, behind her knees, and inside inside inside.

And then the question in that low timbred sound, the sound that was called his voice, the tremble of it as it issued forth from between his lips. She wanted him beside her so she could press her ear against the insanity of his ribcage, protecting him from all the whippings of the world. She would lay her head on his chest while his voice rumbled out of him, while his mouth formed the syllables of her name. Her name inside that toothed cavern.

Where was he, her mind screamed and she wondered for just a fleeting moment if she could call him to her. He said he could follow her to the ends of the world like a dog. A dog! Her canine, her wolf, her creature, the beast inside the man skin. Named by her, called by his name and yet he did not come.

What if she rose from the wedding bed and ran to the windows, threw them open and let her own voice loose, breaking all her teeth as his name left her mouth.

HEATHCLIFF.

But in the bed, another man’s bed, she writhed. Her body filled with unease. Disease. Her limbs desperate to run wild. Once again. Had they run hand in hand through the gorse. She imagined that they had. Indeed. Long ago, they had, she knew they had.

Now, he wasn’t a wild thing caged, it was her.

She could hear him question her. What did you think?

She berated herself, what was it that you believed when you reached out and cast this spell.

She sniffed all the tears back, swallowing hard. What had she thought? Believed? That he was hers and no matter what or where or who she was, he would be just there, beneath her skirts, inside of her mouth, in the palm of her closed fist. She had believed him when he said he would be her dog, forever at her feet, outside the door lying on the stoop, under her bed, beside the hearth.

Who was Edgar to him? What was her marriage to do with him. She couldn’t make it make sense. What did any of this have to do with any of that. With him and her. Why had he left her. Where had he gone.

A cave, dug by both their hands, deep and safe and as vast as the world. A place of their own in which she could shout and scream, and he could whisper and beg, and their pleas would return. Come back. Come back to me. Listen hard, with all your senses, feel his tongue move on your throat as he forms your name with his voice and calls to you from long ago. And his voice returns.

She tossed her body, curled into herself, knees to chest, and wept and wept and wept herself into sleep, into a terrible storm of dreaming. Of a boy and a girl and a wild world lost. Forever.

Wednesday What I'm...

Reading
  • I finished Chupacabra by Roland Smith (Marty & Grace #3). I like this one a lot, though I do wish there was more of the actual chupacabra lol
  • I picked back up and finished Dolphin Watch by John Vornholt (Dinotopia Digest Novels #15). I found one of the characters pretty annoying for much of the book, but I did enjoy it a lot. The ocean setting was really interesting, since it doesn't come up a whole lot in other Dinotopia stuff except in relation to the dolphins!
  • I started reading Mutation by Roland Smith (Marty & Grace #4). I don't remember much of this one, but it's fun!
  • Ficwise, I've mostly been reading VegasPete. Lots of omegaverse for some reason, guess that's just what I'm in the mood for.
Watching
  • The roommate and I finished Lover Merman. What a terrible show lol We watched the first six episodes pretty close together and then took a break to watch our weeklies, and I don't know if it was that break to watch actually good shows or what, but the last two episodes were absolute garbage. I agree with some ppl I've seen online saying the show should have been about Ping, that would have been a much more interesting and engaging story.
  • The roommate and I watched Still 2gether, the sequel to 2gether. It wasn't great, but it was better than the original show! At least we finally got to see Mike and Title kiss :)
  • The roommate and I started watching Peaceful Property. Still surprised it's not an actual BL bc it's definitely got the vibes. But oh my god, how did no one tell me how sad it is?? Like, it's also so, so good, but damn.
  • The roommate, best friend, and I watched the latest episode of Cat for Cash. I'm kind of feeling like this show has no real substance, but it is cute and FirstKhaotung are very sweet. Satang finally showed too, which was fun!
  • The roommate, best friend, and I watched the latest episode of Duang With You. Cute and silly, and I'm really enjoying TeeteePor's dynamic. But wow, what a tone shift for NorthOtto! Very interested to see what's happening there.
  • The roommate, best friend, and I watched the latest episode of Dare You to Death. Prevailing theory wins out! Not mad about it, though I am interested to see more of how it shakes out. Funniest part is that the cops really did not solve shit lol
  • The roommate, best friend, and I watched the latest episode of Yesterday. Continues to be bonkers, though I'm starting to feel there's a bit too much business talk sometimes. One character seems to be maybe dead this episode, and I'm really hoping he's not...
  • The roommate, best friend, and I watched the latest episode of My Romance Scammer. Shit's starting to hit the fan! I'm really loving Yu and the OhmPoon dynamic, which I'm very happy about since this is their first show together.
  • The roommate, best friend, and I finished Kidnap. The best friend seemed to like it, which I was very happy about bc it's one of my favorites! I ended up going through the entire tag on tumblr, then the entire OhmLeng tag as well. Once again so sad about them :(
  • The roommate, best friend, and I started watching My School President. Rewatch for the roommate and I, but this was the only way we could get the best friend to watch it bc she's not really into school dramas.
  • Finished up everything I had recorded for the Olympics except for the closing ceremonies. Women's figure skating was excellent.
  • The roommate and I watched Man Suang. Interesting movie! Can't say I really liked it, but interesting even though I didn't know anything about the time period and politics happening. I had been under the impression there was at least some romance, I guess just bc Mile and Apo are in it, but there's really not lol
Listening
  • I've been slightly obsessively been listening to No Way by LYKN. I liked it alright the first time I listened, but I think it's become one of my favorites of theirs now!
Writing
  • I finished writing an OhmLeng fic that I'd started after the first time we watched Kidnap, since I'm freshly in my OhmLeng feels again. It's kind of wildly self indulgent in a very nothing-actually-happens way, but I'm happy with it!
  • I started writing an ArmTae omegaverse mpreg fic bc I've been reading a bunch of KinnPorsche omegaverse mpreg lol Will anyone but me be interested in it? Unlikely, but oh well.
Learning
  • Read an interesting article about body image and disordered eating in figure skating.
