Like I said, I'm new here. So... talk to me if you're a Torchwood, Dr. Who or West Wing fan... I've got WW slash I could use a beta for before posting. I'm also writing an original science fiction/fantasy (slightly hard to classify) novel. I'd love to talk to any other writers out there as I'm approaching the end of my second draft and when it's done I'll be ready to look for an agent. Therefore also looking for agents out there...

Haven't done my profile yet, not really, since I never know what to say on these things. Anybody have any good suggestions? I mean, what sort of things are you supposed to put in there, huh? Without being either too revealing or too mysterious?

Is anyone else signed up on the dating site OkCupid? I just joined but don't know what to do with my profile there, either. Apart from that, it's a pretty cool and entertaining place.

There's got to be lots of writer communities on LJ. And you'd probably want to narrow it down to SF/Fantasy writer communities. Be forewarned: LJ is full of children. (Adolescents.) If you want to come hang with the old fogies you can join the [livejournal.com profile] fortysomething community, though I think it's best if you wait till you've been on LJ for at least a week before joining. (See its intro page to see why I say this. Though if the moderators were to turn you down, I could put a good word in for you since they're both on my friends list. :-) )

I took my profile down when my household imploded, and haven't yet put up a new one. You can look at other people's user pages to see what they've done. (I have a HUGE friends list if you want to have a look at various profiles just for fun. You'll probably even find a few people you know! :-) )

Hi there, and welcome to the time-sink of wonder that is LJ! Consider yourself friended! Good luck with the posting, beta-ing, etc. I don't have a profile either; my interests list does pretty well for that purpose, actually.

Enjoy, have a look around, and if you want recs for anything, let me know. I get around. :)

Yours, for everlasting peace and damn fine coffee...

Hi, I'm a RL friend of cowgrrl;s: we both work at MIT (well, I did until recently) and I see her around Arisia too: not even six degrees of separation in the collidin fan/con/writer/LJ crowd. Sooo incestuous, and isn't that fun. :-)

I ADORE Torchwood AND WHO and WestWing. My problem is I love to watch them, not so much on the discussing them ad infinitum. So I may not be your best LJ match.

As for what to write in your bio, I suggest reading a bunch, randomly or linking to friends and then to their friends, and see what feels right. I started out very simply, and then added as time went on so that now I'm sure no one will actually read my entire userinfo page. (That's not a challenge, btw.)

There is no "supposed to" in info writing: it's totally YOUR universe here, be who you are or who you want to be. You could even make up outrageus lies abut youreslf. (I saw that done, except it was done wittily, cleaerly lies but very entertaining. I wish I could remember whose LJ it was, I'd link so you could see that anything goes."

Anyway, welcome.

Later edit: and when I multitask and type too fast and the cat is sitting on my chest I mistype and leave out letters and sometimes whole words and look kind of scatterbrained and hope people will blame it on the cat. :-)

Totally understand--I try not to let mine near the 'puter for just that reason. Doesn't always work. What's RL? *ignorant newbie question* BTW tried to reply to emailed version of your message but don't think it worked but if it did sorry for duplication... Anyway, would have replied earlier but yesterday discovered moths in my good wool carpets so was busy tearing hair out and consulting with cowgrrl about what the heck to do. Still haven't figured it out. Glad I looked behind couch when I did, could have been worse. Still--GAAAAH!!! Let this be a lesson to us all.

Another newbie question, how do I find your profile & look at it (if it's okay to)? Ain't much in mine to look at, as I said, but when I've dealt with the moths maybe I'll take some time to fill it in...

RL = real life. more often seen as IRL (in real life). Meaning you actually know these people in person, have seen them. Because it's weird to call someone you've never actually met a "friend" instead of an "acquaintance" or a "cyberbuddy". Though I've become what feels like friends with a few people I've met in LJ.

Replying to email version: I'm not sure how my fiance set me up -- (I'm totally clueless about computers, and use them like a toaster: push a button, get toast. When I don't get toast, I freak -- but as I understand it, everone on LJ can choose to have email notification of replies to LJ posts, or not. So clearly you have that, and so do I. There might be a way to reply back and forth via email if you set it up that way, but clearly roaming@livejounal.com doesn't work. I'll ask about that. ANYWAY, in the email you'll see links to reply to this: click on that link and it brings you back to that particular comment to reply to. You can also choose to see the whole thread or just comments.

To find my profile (of course it's allright!), click on my name in my comments to you in your LJ. That brings you to my LJ and my latest posts. (If you are not on my friends list you'll only see public posts.) At the upper right corner there are links that say (entries/archive/friends/userinfo). You have it too on yours. Click on Userinfo and my profile is there. Yours too.

(Some people make theirs hard to guess by calling it something else. I haven't done much to fiddle with customizing my LJ other than going through the thousands of color styles LJ provides and picking what you see on my lj (purples). Some people get reaallly fancy. (Check out my friends [livejournal.com profile] parrish_relics and [livejournal.com profile] medievalmuse for some lovely examples of how you can get creative if you know how. They're graphic designers, I have no clue. And not enough time to learn. :-) )

If you every run out of space in one comment block, you can always post thatcomment, and then go to another comment block to continue. Like I'm betting I'm almost doing by going on and on like this!

Welcome!

Hello and welcome to LJ! I think you are going to like it here! I am an LJ friend of [livejournal.com profile] cowgrrl and am adding you! I warn you though, that I am decidedly not a fanfic person, so if that is all your entries are about, I probably won't stick around all that long. But I am a friendly sort, not prone to posting all that much, but very good at commenting on my friends' posts!

Feel free to add me back!
